Two men, one child hospitalized for food poisoning

Two grown men and a child fell ill and had to be brought to hospital after consuming what they suspect to be rotten fish.

GMA News' “Saksi," reported late Friday that Quezon City resident Rafael Asis was admitted to the Novaliches District Hospital, complaining of weakness, nausea and other signs of food poisoning. Asis said the meal he had just before getting sick was fish served at an eatery along Commonwealth Avenue.

In Pangasinan, another man and a child were rushed to a local hospital after complaining of food poisoning symptoms after eating fish. Attending doctors there said they have yet to rule out contaminated fish as the cause of their patients’ ailments.

Meanwhile, the Manila zoo, a crocodile farm and the Ninoy Aquino wildlife park in Quezon City, have refused new shipments of rotten fish from fish kill affected areas.

Veterinarians of these wildlife sanctuaries turned away the additional stocks of rotten fish and asked that stocks left over from a previous shipment also be hauled away. The vets said the excessive supply of decaying fish can affect the health of not just crocodiles, but also of other animals in their care.

Local public health officials in Metro Manila, Pangasinan and Batangas were left with no choice but to dump tons of decomposing fish in large pits.

However, local officials have had difficulty looking for vacant lots where the fish can be buried because some lot owners have asked for outlays from local calamity funds. Other lot owners are wary of the public health hazards the rotten fish can bring to their neighborhood.
