Just a thought: A man who gives his children industry provides them better than by giving them a fortune.

MANILA, Philippines -- Indonesian indie: GMA artist in waiting Gwen Zamora has landed the lead role in an Indonesian movie, “The Witness.” The movie is now filming in and around Jakarta.

Gwen, who was introduced in the comedy-action film, “Si Agimat at si Enteng Kabisote,” began working on the Indo-indie on June 29 and is expected to wrap up work on July 26.

Mohammad Yusuf, director of Skylar Pictures based in PT Mutiara Warna in Indonesia, describes his film as a suspense-thriller bordering on the horrific. Gwen’s character is that of a hotel worker transferred by her mother company from Manila to Jakarta.

Gwen, who studies Digital Filmmaking at the College of St. Benilde, is one of GMA Artist Center’s top bets for stardom. She was born and raised in Australia.

Another Filipino, singer-actor Christian Bautista, recently completed a film that was also produced and shot in Indonesia. The movie, “A Special Symphony,” opens on Aug. 3 in Manila and will be released in other parts of South East Asia shortly.

Pacquiao versus Willie: Will Manny Pacquiao succeed as the new Willie Revillame of primetime TV?

The international boxing champion and Saranggani Representative is unwittingly being promoted as Revillame’s counterpart in a competing program set to debut tonight on GMA.

Curiously, Pacquiao’s new live show, “Manny Many Prizes,” will not only air on the same early evening timeslot enjoyed by “Wil Time Big Time,” it has more or less the same format.

Like Willie’s previous shows “Wowowee” and “Willing Willie,” which were mobbed by the masses, long lines of people were spotted the other day around GMA network. They all hoped to get a ticket that would allow them entry to the studio where Pacquiao was taping an episode of his new show.

On his new show, Pacquiao will reward hardworking Filipinos with prizes that could be anything from a house and lot to vehicles and scholarship or start-up funds.

Early beneficiaries of “Manny Many Prizes” are said to be a single mother who juggles three jobs to support her family, a college student who works as a janitor by day, and a bunch of young athletes who lack funding to go for their dreams.

More than being just a show of dole-outs, Pacquiao’s new program must aspire to become a platform for inspiration among common folk. It’s good enough that the show aims to reward hard work, and not just swerte, with prizes.

Being a source of inspiration to Filipinos and even to the world for his rags to riches story, much is expected of Pacquiao’s venture into Willie Revillame territory. The idol of the masses is joined on the show by Rhian Ramos, Isabelle Daza, Paolo Contis, Gladys Guevarra, and Onyok Velasco.

Isay, a well-known singer-actress who belongs to AB Translation ’82, says the project hopes to raise funds for the UST AB Alumni Association scholarship program and at the same time set up a Batch ’82 Emergency Assistance Fund (EAF).
