Thorough probe into demolition ordered

MANILA, Philippines – President Aquino Tuesday ordered a thorough investigation into the violent demolition of shanties of informal settlers in a village in San Juan to prevent a repeat of the incident.

The President directed the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG) to find out the cause of violence in what was supposed to be a voluntary relocation of the informal settlers living near Pinaglabanan Shrine in San Juan, according to Presidential Communications Development and Strategic Planning Office Secretary Ramon Carandang.

Carandang said the relocation of the poor San Juan residents was earlier given a green light despite a temporary moratorium on demolition of informal housing settlements because it was supposed to be voluntary.

“Obviously something went wrong. The President directed the DILG to investigate what happened,” Carandang told reporters in the Palace, following reports 40 people were injured when clash broke out between the residents and a government demolition team in San Juan.
