Aquino visits wake of Angelo Reyes


MANILA, Philippines - President Benigno Aquino III visited Friday the wake of former Defense Secretary Angelo Reyes at St. Ignatius Cathedral in Camp Aguinaldo.

ANC footage showed Aquino arriving at the chapel past 4 p.m. and speaking with the wife and children of the late defense secretary.

He was accompanied by his spokesman, Edwin Lacierda, defeated vice-presidential bet Mar Roxas, Social Welfare Secretary Dinky Soliman and Secretary Jesse Robredo of the Department of the Interior and Local Government.

Reyes, a former Armed Forces chief of staff, committed suicide last Tuesday after being embroiled in a corruption scandal involving 3 former military chiefs. He was accused of pocketing P50 million in military funds upon his retirement in 2001.




His body was first brought to Arlington Memorial Funeral Homes before he was brought to Camp Aguinaldo Friday morning.

The Harvard Society is set to give a eulogy for Reyes at 5 p.m.. Reyes has a master's degree in public administration from the Harvard University.

A military spokesman said Reyes's remains will be transferred to the General Headquarters (GHQ) canopy on Saturday, 5 p.m., where a mass and necrological service would be held.

The final mass will be held at 8 a.m., Sunday, February 13, at the canopy.

The body is expected to arrive at the Libingan ng mga Bayani at 11 a.m. Sunday. There, Reyes would be given the 19-gun salute and flower-petal drops during the procession.

Reyes will be given a 21-gun salute when the body is laid to its final resting place.
