Cultures, generations mix at Panagbenga street parade

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines - Session Road looked like a sea of red, yellow, green and orange on Saturday morning as the city celebrated this year's Panagbenga Grand Street Parade.

Hundreds of residents, with their vibrant costumes and props, showcased their "progressive" and "stationary" dance moves during the much-awaited event, which lasted for 1.5 hours.

Locals and tourists waited at the sidewalks, cheering for dancers and bands that passed them by. Some of them even waited as early as dawn so they can get a better glimpse of the action.

On another end were merchants who sold a variety of items to keep festival-goers warm amid Baguio City's chilly weather -- from strawberry taho and banana fritters to scarves and animal hats made of synthetic fur.

Mix, mix, mix

This year's Grand Street Parade was not just about the colorful flowers, but also about the mix of people from different cultures and generations.

For one, the festivities kicked off with marching band renditions of modern-day hits such as Justin Bieber's Baby and Bruno Mars's Just the Way You Are.

These were followed by rows upon rows of men and women clad in traditional Igorot costumes.

Also worth noting are the great number of Koreans and Japanese who blended in with Filipinos as they happily participated in the event.

Little kids, high school students and adults in Baguio City all did their share to make the 16th Panagbenga Grand Street Parade a success. And it was, judging by the huge crowd it has drawn.

Meanwhile, the city prepares for the parade of floats on Sunday morning.
