Mayonnaise

Mayonnaise is a foursome Filipino band of Alternative rock/pop-punk band. They became famous after winning the prestigious Red Horse Muziklaban in 2004.

Monty Macalino, Paga Manikan, Len Maningas and Cian Regalado composed the recent line-up of the band. Monty was the only original member left at the band. The band performed with guitar-tunes with ultra-catchy hooks and convincing lyrics.

Monty Macalinao is the band’s frontman and songwriter. He is hefty and beefy in appearance that one might mistake him for a roadie. He writes when he is upset and can write a lot when his creativity kicks in. Mostly, he wrote about experiences and 75% about love. Lee Manigas is the bassist of the band and also big and chunky.

Cian Regalado is the drummer and is as skinny as they come. Paga Manikan is the second guitarist and does not look any bigger. Monty is a BS Multi-media student of La Salle- St. Cenilde and the other three were BS Music Production students of La Salle- College of St. Benilde and Phil Christian University.

From the former member, Monty was the only loyal to the band since it was his brainchild since high school. Lee is not the original bassist, just as Cian Regalado is not the original drummer and Paga Manikan is not the original guitarist.

They started their career performing in clubs and in a gig at Saguio in Makati. The year seemed favourable to them. The band also played for their friends and in gigs occasionally together with more established bands. Mayonnaise started to attract wider audience as Mark Escueta of Rivermaya heard them perform and offered them for a demo. They combined hits like Tulog, Bakit, Punk You and Pseudo and gained fanbase unexpectedly bigger, extending from their network of friends until they landed in their first Fete dela Musique gig in 2002.

The Fete served as basis of the band’s history. The original drummer already left and the original bassist performed his last gig. The band would have been fallen apart if not by its enormous audience. So, the band continued.

The original song Bakit was written back 1999 when there were only three members of the band. The acoustic version of the song was produced which did not suit well with Monty who wants the rockier version. It’s hard to distinguish Monty being a joker when he performed as pained and angry guy in hits like The Only Thing and Bakit.

But after two year, out from nothingness, they joined stiff competition. They participated in ”Red Horse Musiklaban” band contest and won the grand prize on 2004, besting over 3000 competing bands all over the country. The first single The Only Thing and the current one, Eddie Song was steadily rising in radio charts and the songs attributed to the winning of the Muziklaban. Aside from amount of money, the prize included a recording deal with Vamp Records.

On December of the same year, the band released its self-titled debut album under the label of Sony BMG Philippines. The album spawned hit songs like The Only Thing, Bakit II, Eddie Song and Jopay. Jopay became a very successful single, topping radio charts and music channels nationwide.

The current line-up is actually the third, as member changes had been inevitable in the band's history. Some of the songs have been around that long, but in different versions. The songs change with each change in the line-up, as each new member brings their own input and flavor to the song. The improvement to the sound of the band was due to its line-up change. Though Monty was the main songwriter and the three other members will defer him for any decision, each members of the band contributed for its live shows and in albums.

The band’s sophomore album was entitled Pa’no Nangyari Yun?, produced independently under Vamp Records and was distributed by Sony BMG. The album featured the catchy and witty song Panaginip which became one of the top ten songs played in the radio. Monty here appeared serious and depressed but he is just too focused in writing songs for the album. As the main songwriter and composer, he wrote 90% of the album’s songs.

On 2008, Mayonnaise released its third album under Viva Records named Tersera. The album produced its carrier single Sinungaling.
Mayonnaise is truly an advocate of music and life. As long as the band continues to write bundles of witty and catchy songs in pop, Mayonnaise is here to stay.
