Angping makes surprise reappearance

MANILA, Philippines—After weeks of absence, Philippine Sports Commission chair Harry Angping Thursday showed up in his office at the Rizal Memorial Sports Complex, fanning speculations that his reported successor has not been given the green light by President Benigno Aquino III.

Angping, who submitted his courtesy resignation on June 30 to give the President a free hand in choosing the next government sports czar, showed up with the PSC’s division supervisors.

He earlier said he would not report for work anymore following a Palace memorandum circular requiring all political appointees to vacate their posts and leave the reins to the highest civil service career officials.

When asked about his return to his old office Thursday, Angping said in a text message: “I never left. Just hanging around.”

Last week, former PSC commissioner Richie Garcia was reported to have showed up in Malacañang together with Philippine Olympic Committee head Jose “Peping” Cojuangco, an uncle of the President and a fierce Angping critic.

There were also reports that Angping might be asked to stay put until after the Asian Games in Guangzhou, China, in November.
