72 Pinoys on death row in China

About a hundred more facing death sentences in other countries

MANILA, Philippines - Sally Ordinario-Villanueva, Ramon Credo and Elizabeth Batain are not the only Filipinos on death row in China.

The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said more than 200 Filipinos have been detained in China since 2006.

Seventy-two of them are on death row for drug trafficking, 38 have life sentences and nearly 80 are serving 15-year jail terms, while 35 cases are still being heard

Only 6 cases of the 72 on death row reached the China's Supreme Court. Two of them were overturned, 3 of them were affirmed while 1 is still being reviewed.

Senate Resolution Number 1192 filed by Sen. Manny Villar stated that 111 Filipinos have been arrested in China, Hong Kong and Macau since 2008 for drug related offenses.

The latest case is that of Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson who is serving one and a half year in prison in Hong Kong for drug trafficking. He was found with more than 6 grams of cocaine in his possession at the airport in July 2010.

About 120 more Filipinos are facing death sentences in other countries.
