IBM tapped to solve Metro Cebu's traffic

CEBU CITY, Philippines (PNA) -- Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia is eyeing a unified traffic management system solution with the help of IBM, an American multinational technology and consulting firm, and the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc.

Garcia said she has met with IBM and Rafi officials to discuss this possible undertaking.

Based on IBM’s website, it is assisting in solving the traffic management and congestion problems of London in the United Kingdom, Singapore and Stockholm in Sweden and Brisbane in Australia.

Garcia said the firm is working on smart systems that are applicable in Cebu.

She invited IBM, which has the templates for these huge projects, to join the Metro Cebu Development Council (MCDC). IBM and Rafi will be included as private representatives, she said.

She said it was Rafi president Roberto Bobby” Aboitiz who told her about IBM’s software system.

She said there is a need to come up with an integrated technology-assisted solutions and IBM has volunteered to contribute its expertise.

”They are very willing to help and will be honored to be a member of the MCDC,” she said.

The governor hopes IBM will offer its services for free, and the province will only buy the needed software infrastructure.

On March 16, local government units in Metro Cebu will sign the memorandum of agreement (MOA), where they express their commitment to work and help each other as they address the problems of flooding, drainage and solid waste management.
