MANILA, Philippines - House Speaker Feliciano “Sonny” Belmonte, Jr. has stopped the expulsion proceedings against Ilocos Sur Rep. Ronald Singson after receiving via electronic mail a copy of the latter’s resignation letter.
The letter reads: “I am resigning your honor, not because I am succumbing to the pressure of the noisy few among my honorable colleagues but rather…it is a fulfillment of a promise to my father who has the right to have the first and loudest protest because it was his name and honor that was mercilessly dragged into the tempest of my own undoing.”
Singson's father, Ilocos Sur Governor Luis “Chavit” Singson, earlier claimed he has yet to receive a copy of his son's resignation letter.
He did not disclose that an e-mail had been sent by his son's lawyer. He claimed obtaining such is a “complicated” matter.
Belmonte said he will wait for the hard copy of the letter, at the most Wednesday. Only until he receives the hard copy will the younger Singson officially be resigned.
A Hong Kong court last week sentenced to 18 months in prison the lawmaker for illegal drug possession.
Singson had earlier pleaded guilty to drug trafficking.
Wan Chai District Court Judge Joseph Yau said the sentence is for Singson's possession of 6.67 grams of cocaine, while the 2 months are for the 2 tablets of the narcotic Nitrazepam. These drugs were seized from Singson at the Hong Kong airport on July 11, 2010.
The judge mentioned during the promulgation that the sentence had a "discount" for Singson's good behavior while out on bail in Hong Kong and for pleading guilty to the charge.
