Operation of LRT stations suspended

MANILA, Philippines — The operation of six stations of the Light Rail Transit (LRT) line 1 will be temporarily suspended this weekend to give way to the integration and fine-tuning of the rail system’s signaling system that monitors train movements to prevent accidental collision and overspeeding.

Atty. Hernando Cabrera, spokesperson of the LRT Authority (LRTA), said the LRT 1 operation will be limited from Baclaran in Pasay to Blumentritt in Manila starting Saturday, May 28, until Monday next week, May 30.

Cabrera said the operation of stations at Abad Santos, R. Papa, 5th Avenue, Monumento, Balintawak and Roosevelt will be temporarily suspended during those days as these six stations will be affected by the integration of different signaling systems being used from the original LRT 1 from Baclaran to Monumento stations and that utilized from Balintawak to Roosevelt stations, which consist the LRT 1’s North Extension Project. While the original line uses Siemens signaling system, the north extension utilizes a Tewet brand.

“We have to close certain segments of Line 1 so that we can finally complete the integration of the signaling systems of the original line and the north extension project. Since the two use different signaling systems, it will take us time to permanently integrate them,” Cabrera said.

Thousands of daily LRT 1 riders are expected to be affected advers ely by the temporary suspension of operations of the six LRT 1 stations, while the LRTA also projects to lose millions of pesos in revenue for each day that the six stations are closed to commuters.
