I.M.E.C. benefits 110 Maritime cadets

CEBU CITY, Cebu (PNA) — The International Maritime Employers’ Committee Ltd. (IMEC) has granted full scholarship to 110 maritime cadets of the University of Cebu (UC) Maritime School and assured them of jobs abroad after graduation.

IMEC is a maritime organization funded by the International Maritime Training Trust, which is dedicated to producing highly competent seafarers to meet the increasing demand for officers working on board international vessels.

UC Chancellor Candice Gotianuy said the 110 cadets who are mostly from poor families were chosen from the 10,000 applicants for school years 2011 to 2015.

Twister wrecks North Iloilo houses

ILOILO CITY, Iloilo (PNA) — Fifty houses were damaged by a twister that hit a coastal barangay of a northern Iloilo municipality on Friday.

Johnny Brasa barangay captain of Brgy. Guintas in Barotac Nuevo, Iloilo said the howler swept through the barangay, destroying 20 houses totally and partially damaging 30 more.

Brgy. Guintas is located along the shoreline of Barotac Nuevo.

Affected families were given assistance by the Barotac Nuevo local government unit.

Firm builds day care centers

DAVAO CITY (PNA) — The Aboitiz Power Group in Mindanao is building five day care centers in support of government’s newly launched K+12 education program.

Davao Light and Power Company (DLPC) Community Relations manager Vic Sumalinog said DLPC, which distributes power in Davao City and its neighboring areas of Panabo City and in the municipalities of Carmen, Dujali and Sto. Tomas in Davao del Norte, is now half-way in its construction of three centers.

Said centers are inside the campuses of Maa Elementary School in Davao City’s first district; C. Villafuerte Sr. Elementary School in Calinan in the third district; and Mudiang Elementary School in the city’s second district.

D.S.W.D. donation

SAN JOSE, Antique (PIA) — Day-care centers in Antique province received cooking utensils from the Department of Social Welfare and Development in support of the local government's supplemental feeding program.

The utensils will be given to 630 day-care centers in the province with a total enrollment of 20,195 children ages 3-4 years old. Antique ranks second in malnutrition nationwide.

There are 628 day-care workers and parents involved in the program which provides daily supplemental feeding for the children.

Anti-flu shots in E. Samar

BORONGAN, Eastern Samar (PIA) — Children in Eastern Samar also took part in PhilHealth Sabado II last Saturday, June 25, 2011.Children from barangays in Borongan City’s center got free anti-influenza shots at the PhilHealth Office for free.

Some 200 shots were prepared. Vernard Pinanggay of PhilHealth Borongan said over 200 PhilHealth members joined the activity. In a statement, the local government of Eastern Samar revealed its sponsorship of PhilHealth membership to 31,000 indigent families in the province.
