TIFF dedicates section to Cinemalaya winners

MANILA, Philippines – Four award-winning films from the Cinemalaya Philippine Independent Film Festival will be screened in the 24th Tokyo International Film Festival’s section, Winds of Asia-Middle East - Filipino Express: New Breeze from CINEMALAYA.

Leading the pack are this year’s Cinemalaya Best Film awardees “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank (The Woman in the Septic Tank)” by Marlon Rivera (New Breed Full Length category) and “Bisperas (Trespassers)” by Jeffrey Jeturian (Directors Showcase), which are also nominated for the TIFF's Best Asian-Middle Eastern Film Award.

Aside from Best Film, both films took home four more awards each in their respective categories: Best Actress (Eugene Domingo), Best Screenplay (Chris Martinez), Best Director and the Audience Choice Award for “Ang Babae sa Septic Tank"; Best Production Design (Rodrigo Ricio), Best Cinematography (Roberto Yñiguez), Best Supporting Actress (Julia Clarete) and Best Actress (Raquel Villavicencio) for “Bisperas.”

Another film included in the lineup is Sheron Dayoc’s “Halaw (Ways of the Sea),” winner of Cinemalaya 2010’s Best Film, Best Actor (John Arcilla) and Best Editing (Lester Olager and Chuck Gutierrez) . Later that year it was screened at the TIFF according to said festival’s official website.

The fourth is “Colorum” by Jon Steffan Ballesteros, Special Jury Award and Best Actor (Lou Veloso) winner at the local film fest’s 2009 edition. Like “Halaw,” it was screened at the TIFF the same year it competed at the Cinemalaya.

Meanwhile, French director Hubert’s 2010 documentary about the film history of the Philippines, “Retour à Manille: Le cinéma Philippin (Return to Manila: Filipino Cinema)” will be screened alongside Italian director Leonardo Cinieri Lombroso’s “Through Korean Cinema” in the TIFF’s Discovering Asian Cinema: Film History a la Carte.

The 24th Tokyo International Film Festival will be held from Oct. 22-30 in Tokyo, Japan.
