MANILA, Philippines (Xinhua) - A magnitude-5.1 quake rocked the southern Philippines at 7:27 a.m. today, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said. There were no immediate reports of damage or casualty.

The epicenter of the quake, which was of tectonic origin and struck from a depth of 588 kilometers, was traced 58 kilometers southwest of Dulawan, Cotabato province, said the institute, adding no damage or aftershocks were expected.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) put the quake at magnitude-4.9.

The Philippines sits in the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, an area where continental plates collide, producing frequent quakes and volcanic activities.
