Numbers favor Pacquiao over Marquez

The anti-climactic ending of the fight between Filipino boxing champ Manny Pacquiao and his Mexican nemesis Juan Manuel Marquez on Sunday (Manila time) seemed to have failed to put a closure on the rivalry, with many boxing fans — Filipinos included — expressing doubts on Pacquiao’s victory.

A check on the scoreboard, however, clearly shows that the numbers favored Pacquiao, who retained his WBO welterweight title via majority decision.

Boxing website BoxingScene.com noted that statistics from the CompuBox PunchStat report showed Pacquiao had thrown and landed more shots than Marquez.

"Pacquiao had just a 117-100 edge in power shots landed, while Marquez landed the cleaner shots. Pac was busier, averaging 49 punches thrown per round to 36 per round for Marquez," it said.

The figures showed Pacquiao connected on 176 of 578 punches he threw (30 percent), landed 59 of 304 jabs (19 percent) and connected on 117 of 274 power punches (43 percent).

In contrast, Marquez landed 138 of 436 punches (32 percent), connected on 38 of 182 jabs (21 percent) and landed 100 of 254 power punches (39 percent).

On the other hand, FightNews.com showed the judges' thinking in what would turn out to be a close majority decision by Pacquiao over Marquez.

Judge Robert Hoyle called it 114-all, Dave Moretti called it 115-113, while Glenn Trowbridge judged the fight in Pacquiao's favor, 116-112. [See judges' scorecards here.]

But FightNews noted that after eight rounds, Hoyle and Moretti saw the bout as tied at 76-all, while Trowbridge saw Pacquiao ahead 77-75.

In the end, Hoyle awarded both Pacquiao and Marquez two rounds, while Moretti (115-113) and Trowbridge (116-112) scored three of the last four rounds for Pacquiao.

"Marquez may have eased up slightly toward the finish after being assured by his corner that he was ahead in the bout," it noted.
