Phivolcs: Magnitude-5.3 quake jolts Davao Sur; aftershocks expected

A magnitude-5.3 quake jolted the Davao del Sur area before dawn Sunday, with state seismologists warning of possible aftershocks.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said the quake was recorded at 1:31 a.m. and was tectonic in origin.

In its initial bulletin, it said the quake's epicenter was at 168 km southeast of Jose Abad Santos (Trinidad) in Davao del Sur.

While it did not initially indicate specific areas where the quake was felt, it said no damage was expected.

The United States Geological Survey measured the quake at magnitude 5.0.

It estimated the quake's epicenter was at:

- 218 km east-southeast of General Santos City
- 237 km southeast of Davao
- 327 km south-southeast of Hinatuan
- 851 km west-soutwest of Koror, Palau
