MANILA, Philippines – The Binibining Pilipinas title holders remain poised despite critics sneering at their respective triumphs.
In a live interview on "The Buzz," April 17, top five winners Shamcey Supsup (Binibining Pilipinas-Universe), Dianne Necio (International), Isabella Manjon (Tourism), Janine Tugonon (First Runner-Up) and Mary Jean Lastimosa (Second Runner-Up) addressed the issues that beset them.
Although some are skeptical over Shamcey’s ability to equal or even surpass her predecessor Venus Raj, who was hailed Fourth Runner-Up at the Miss Universe 2010 pageant, the magna cum laude Architecture graduate refuses to be pressured.
“Instead of being pressured, I take Ms. Venus Raj’s achievement as an inspiration. So sabi naman niya you cannot compare her experience with our experience kasi iba naman daw ‘yung people you’ll be with, the candidates will be different, the judges will be different,” said Shamcey.
What’s important, she added, is to “do your best, be yourself and let’s just hope that whatever you do there, ‘yun ‘yung hinahanap nila. And sana ‘yun nga, and we’ll get the crown.”
Dianne, meanwhile, sounded confident that she will bring home the Miss International crown, a feat Precious Lara Quigaman achieved back in 2005. She’s also determined to prove herself worthy of her title amid allegations that she only won because of her closeness to Venus.
“I’m expecting naman [to win] kasi I tried my best. I’ve prepared for this for two years na, since last year I joined Bb. Pilipinas and I was the first runner-up. Talagang nag-undergo na ko ng same training with Ate Venus, and the other girls. Kaya talagang confident na rin ako kahit papa’no,” she said.
Others may deem them undeserving to be part of the top five, but Isabella and Janine simply shrugged it off.
“Tina-try ko naman po ‘yung best ko to do everything that I can, to perform, to do well. And we have trainings also for walking, for Q & A, how we [carry] ourselves,” said Isabella.
Janine, meanwhile, said: “We can’t please everybody naman talaga, 'di ba? May mga tao talaga na hindi ikaw ‘yung bet, may mga tao na ikaw ‘yung bet. So sa’kin, hayaan na lang sila, mawawala rin naman siguro ‘yung issue na ‘yon. Andito na kami, kami ‘yung nanalo, so I think, wala na tayong magagawa,” said she.
Even Mary Jean’s expression when she was declared Second Runner-Up became a source of issue, as she was said to have been caught on camera looking “disappointed.”
“Well of course, each and everyone of us are expecting to win. So I think, kung anuman ‘yung nakita nilang emotion ko sa camera, I think natural lang ‘yon. Hindi naman siguro ako magtatatalon do’n nung tinawag akong ganun. I’m being real,” MJ explained.
She maintained that she has no ill feelings over the results. “It’s a competition. May nananalo, may natatalo,” said she.
