MANILA, Philippines -- The late defense secretary Angelo Reyes was set up and Malacañang knew who the real culprit was behind the multimillion-peso fund scam in the military, a close friend of Reyes disclosed to Radyo Inquirer Wednesday.
Retired Commodore Rex Robles told "Tapatan" that the alleged exposé by former military budget officer George Rabusa on the P50 million "send-off" money to Reyes and to other former chiefs of staff was a "smokescreen" to hide the truth that the former military comptroller facing plunder for amassing illegal wealth and the main subject of these inquiries was being protected by the government.
Robles said Rabusa was invited in the hearings to shed light on the case against General Carlos Garcia and the plea bargaining agreement he had forged with government prosecutors.
He said he was surprised when Rabusa started implicating Reyes on the "send-off" money, which diverted the issue about Garcia altogether.
Reyes died Tuesday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the chest in front of his mother's grave in Marikina City.
