MANILA, Philippines—Another reality show for young talented singers who want to break into the music industry was launched Tuesday.
The new talent search, dubbed “OPM@PAGCOR, a Nationwide Search for the Total OPM Performer,” will not be shown live on television but big cash prizes, a performance contract with the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (Pagcor) and a full scholarship grant for a week-long workshop, among others, await the winners of the contest.
The talent search, the first tie-up between the Pagcor and the Organisasyon ng Pilipinong Mang-aawit (OPM), was formally launched in Paranaque City.
“It will be like a reality show without the live TV coverage,” said Pagcor Assistant Vice President for Entertainment Bong Quintana.
Pagcor said the talent search will be open to all amateur Filipino singers or persons with dual citizenship who are at least 18 years old but have not won any major prize in any national singing competition.
The deadline for submission of application is March 10, and the auditions will officially begin on March 18, starting at Casino Filipino Angeles. Other audition venues are the Casino Filipino branches in the Manila Pavilion hotel, Tagaytay, Bacolod, Cebu and Davao.
Two top winners in six Pagcor Regional Casino Filipino semi-final competitions will receive P25,000 and a plaque each while non-winning contestants will be given a consolation price of P5,000 each plus a plaque.
Aside from cash awards, the 12 winners in the semi-final competitions will also be eligible to join the competition finals and will be awarded a full scholarship grant to participate in the week-long OPM-Pagcor Professional Singing and Live Performance Workshop from May 28 to June 4.
The workshop will be facilitated by the country’s top singers, music educators, concert directors, musical directors and professional talent managers.
The grant will also cover round-trip transportation cost, shared accommodations and meal allowance for the entire duration of the training, rehearsals for the grand finals and the grand finals itself.
“Through the talent search, deserving Filipino singers will have the rare opportunity of being trained by no less than the country’s top music icons,” Quintana said.
“We will package the most talented artist as the Total OPM performer. Those who will reach the semi-final round will be given proper music training, exposure and opportunities that will help launch their singing career,” he further said.
The nationwide search will culminate on June 10, 2011, during the grand finals to be held at the Pagcor Grand Theater, Airport Casino Filipino, Paranaque City.
The grand prize winner will be awarded a cash prize of P300,000, a trophy, a recording contract with a major label sponsor, and a performance contract with Pagcor while the second- and third-prize winners will receive P 200,000 and P100, 000, respectively, plus trophies.
Non-winners will each get P20,000 and a plaque.
OPM president Ogie Alcasid expressed his elation with the joint endeavor with Pagcor.
“OPM is very happy about this tie-up. This is one of the good examples of private-government cooperation, a good gesture of government support to the local music industry,” Alcasid said.
