Davis Cup: Philippines bounces back vs Japan

MANILA, Philippines – The Philippine team bounced back from its losses to Japan last Friday by beating their Japanese foes during Saturday’s doubles match in the Asia-Oceania Davis Cup Group I tie at the Plantation Bay Resorts and Spa in Lapu-Lapu City.

Cecil Mamiit and Treat Huey teamed up to beat Japanese partners Yuichi Sugita and Takao Suzuki in three sets, 6-1, 7-6, 6-2.

Despite the loss, Team Japan still enjoys the lead in the five-match duel, 2-1.

The Filipino netters will have to sweep the last two matches against Japan for a chance to move closer into Davis Cup’s elite World group.

Team Philippines actually nominated Johnny Arcilla and Elbert Anasta to play in the doubles but changed the line-up before the match to boost its chances.

The games will continue on Sunday with Mamiit facing Go Soeda and Arcilla playing against Tatsuma Ito in the reverse singles.
