Donaire reconciles with dad: report

MANILA, Philippines – Filipino boxing champion Nonito Donaire Jr., whose thorny relationship with his father has been a hot topic in the local boxing scene, finally reunited with his dad and former trainer, Nonito Donaire Sr.

According to Manny Piñol’s Philboxing column, Nonito Jr. and his wife, Rachel, made peace with Nonito Sr. and the rest of the Donaire family on Thursday (Friday in Manila).

“Now, I can breathe freely!” Nonito Sr. was quoted as saying in Piñol’s column, titled as Braveheart.

Nonito Jr. and Rachel reportedly went to Nonito Sr.’s home in San Leandro, California. The family then proceeded to the Courtyard Inn in Castro Valley City, where they had their heart-to-heart talk.

Nonito Sr. said he only wanted his son to take back the accusation that he stole $80,000 from the couple's bank account.

According to the elder Donaire, Nonito Jr. talked to them sincerely and clarified that he was just misquoted. Nonito Jr. reportedly apologized to his father.

"That was all that I asked from them. Correct the story that I stole money from them. And they corrected it and apologized. That was all that I wanted," said Nonito Sr.

The father and son hugged after the reconciliation, ending the bitter feud that lasted for three years.

"I also asked for his and Rachel's forgiveness if I had done or said anything that may have hurt them," Nonito Sr. said.

The dispute between father and son started in 2008 over money issues.

Filipino boxing fans were pleased with the reconciliation.

"All's well that ends well... Now, Nonito can be more focused," said a fan nicknamed, Alilee, in Philboxing.com's message forum.

"Yes, finally," said "Right Uppercut", also a member of the forum.

"Nice! Way to go idol Nonito Jr.," said another fan using the nickname "Studstar".
