Kim Chiu faces acid test

Just a thought: When we look back and wonder how we ever made it through. We realize it’s not because we’ve been clever, but because God has been wise.

MANILA, Philippines -- Acid test: Kim Chiu faces a big test in her career by headlining the title role in “My Binondo Girl,” a new romantic comedy-drama that unreels on channel 2 screens starting August 22.

The series officially marks Kim’s breakaway from constant partner, Gerald Anderson, who himself has been branching out to other endeavors. Gerald has played opposite Jewel Mische in a relatively successful mini-series, “Buhawi Jack,” and scored a big hit opposite Sarah Geronimo in the movie, “Catch Me… I’m In Love.”

On the basis of their film’s success, the Sarah-Gerald tandem has also fetched them a hefty endorsement from Globe.

For her part, Kim was named by Yes Magazine as 2010’s most in-demand endorser. While the young Cebuana, in collaboration with Anderson, has created hits out of teleseryes such as “Tayong Dalawa” and “Kung Tayo’y Magkakalayo,” she has not been successful with her big-screen outings as “Till My Heartaches End” and “First Day High.”

The thinking is that audiences prefer to watch Kim and Gerald on free TV. They think twice about parting with hard-earned money to watch those they see regularly on the tube.

Perhaps, it is wise that ABS-CBN has decided to separate Gerald and Kim for the meantime. Absence may make the heart grow fonder next time.
