Phil and Angelica each airs opinion over her latest Twitter tirade

MANILA, Philippines – Azkals striker Phil Younghusband defended himself and his Azkals teammates from Angelica Panganiban’s latest swipes at them following her heated exchange with his fan over Twitter last March 3.

Apparently still at the peak of her emotions after she tweeted about Phil’s appearance in an indie film and suggested that he should focus on football, the sexy actress hurled biting remarks about the players.

Nakakatawa kasi kapag napapanood mo sila, lahat na lang interviews sa kanila about sa mga crush nila, ‘yung ano ng date, ‘yung nangyari sa inyo ni ganito. Wow ang showbiz!

‘Wag nating gawing stepping stone ang paglalaro ng football para maging artista,” she said in her interview aired on “E-Live,” March 5.

Via a separate interview, also on “E-Live,” Phil responded, “I’ve been playing football all my life, since I was three years old. And I don’t think football in the Philippines is a way of entering showbiz,” said he.

James Younghusband also supported his brother’s statement.

“I can assure that Phil has no intention of joining showbiz,” he quipped.

Albeit he once joined GMA-7’s “Celebrity Duets,” Phil said that he really has no plans of plunging into showbiz and maintained that football remains his top priority.

But Angelica is infuriated for another reason; that is, she had a row with a Twitter user who chided her boyfriend Derek Ramsay for being a “trying hard” athlete. She laments the seeming lack of awareness on Derek’s sacrifices as part of the Philippine team of Frisbee, which, she pointed out, has given honors to the country.

She went on to claim that fame has gotten into the heads of football players.

“Hindi nila alam ‘yon… na si Derek mismo ‘yung nagbabayad, nagbibigay ng funds para sa Philippine team ng Frisbee... na nakakatawa kasi ang football ang dami nilang donations na nakukuha pero ang lalaki na ng ulo nila. Sino kayo?” Angelica said, teary-eyed.

Phil, meanwhile, notes that their early success "hasn’t gone into our heads.”

If we want football to grow even more, we can’t let it get to our heads and it’s important that everyone works as a team. For me it’s about promoting football… and if everyone gets positive press then it’s important you use that in the most effective way,” he said.

Although he declined to comment on the Twitter war because “I don’t know the details,” Phil respects Angelica’s statements. He even said in his interview with “Bandila” on March 3 that she might’ve “misunderstood” his participation in the indie film.

Everyone’s entitled to their opinions. I can assure Angelica right now we are concentrating on playing against Mongolia. I just heard that she said that maybe we should concentrate on playing. And she’s right. The movie was shot last year. It’s an indie film to promote football, and they’re trying to reach public schools and the… children,” said Phil in the same “E-Live” interview.

The controversial Azkal is grateful that his fans have his back.

“It’s nice to know my fans defend me… It’s nice to know they’re passionate, and they strongly support me. I thank them for that,
” he said.

Unlike Angelica, Derek appeared calm though sad when interviewed by “E-Live” about the latest Twitter war that his girlfriend, and he got embroiled in albeit inadvertently.

“May nagsalita nga raw na I’m a wannabe athlete. [That's] true. I wanna be an athlete. Wala raw akong nabibigay na karangalan. Well, I have a lot of medals to prove [na meron].

“I don’t know why you’d have to say such hurtful things. If you don’t have something nice to say, sana keep it to yourself. 'Wag na lang kayo magsalita,” he said.

Derek understands where Angelica is coming from about her strong opinions on his career in sports.

“She’s seen how hard I’ve worked, sacrificing time, sleep [for practice]. I love sports, and I’ve broken every bone in my body trying to win for the Philippines, trying to win for my team mates,” the actor said.

Recall that last year, Derek's team won in the Division A championship of the Singapore Ultimate Open.

Angelica and Derek are set to sue the Twitter user who threw invectives against them.

“Magde-demanda kami sa mga sinabi niya. Bastos siya magsalita, and hindi ko hahayaan ‘yung mga ganong klaseng bagay na sabihin sa’ming mga artista,” the feisty actress said.
